Preservative Free Skincare

Preservative free skincare

Many skincare products include preservatives. Can they harm your skin?

I would like to share why our skincare does not use preservatives.

6 Good Reasons why you won't see Preservatives in Fresk Products

It is a deliberate decision that Fresk Skincare took to exclude preservatives in our products. This decision was based on extensive research and on our core values of wanting to offer Australians genuinely natural skincare that is good for you. We would be delighted for you to join us on our journey to limit the use of harmful and toxic chemicals on your skin. Below are the 6 reasons why we choose not to add preservatives in our skincare products.

  1. Preservatives can increase skin sensitivity. Studies done by Fancl Research Institute and Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine found that preservatives in skincare can cause your skin to age more rapidly than normal. Constant exposure increases skin sensitivity and hinders cell renewal and repair.
  2. Preservatives weaken the skin barrier. It can compromise your skin's barrier affecting your skin renewal cycle. Skin cannot regenerate properly so the protective layer becomes made up of damaged cells. This makes the skin less able to defend itself against external aggressors such as UV rays and pollution.
  3. Preservatives contribute to sagging skin and wrinkles. It can cause skin to lose its elasticity and firmness as it affects the production of collagen and damages cells at the DNA level.
  4. Preservatives can cause skin inflammation. It can cause redness, itchiness and other skin inflammation particularly in people with sensitive skin.
  5. Skin irritants. Many synthetic chemicals used as preservatives are considered as skin irritants, skin penetrators, endocrine disrupters or are carcinogenic. It would be an interesting exercise to check if your products have any preservatives in it.
  6. Preservative in skin care has the potential to alter our skin's microbiome. A study was conducted on skin creams containing the commonly used paraben preservatives 1,2-hexanediol and phenoxyethanol. There was a reduction in some bacterial populations, and enhanced growth of others, thereby disrupting the balance of the bacterial population in the skin. In another study, when skin care products containing the preservatives triclosan, phenoxyethanol or parabens were applied, there was an immediate reduction in the number of bacteria sampled from the skin. This suggests that preservative in skincare products has the potential to alter our skin's microbiome.

Important note: Fresk Skincare products contain 100% pure essential oils. Some essential oils contain properties that act as a natural preservative. Provided that you don't have any allergic or sensitive reactions to the essential oils, they have antiseptic and anti-microbial properties that kill bacteria and fungi. Fresk Skincare adheres to Robert Tisserand (one of the world's leading experts in aromatherapy) guidelines on usage and effective but safe amounts.

6 ways you can protect yourself and your loved ones

It's difficult for you to avoid every single synthetic chemical, but you can limit the amount of toxins your body is exposed to.

  1. Before buying your skincare products read and examine the ingredients list and be well informed and educate yourself about them even if they are classified as 100% natural. Look up their scientific or INCI name so you're familiar with them. The more you do it the easier it becomes to recognise ingredients to avoid.
  2. Use less products as it means that you are less exposed to fewer ingredients. Only use products with fewer ingredients and with ingredients that are genuinely natural. Always examine the ingredients list.
  3. Look for products without water (or aqua, or eau). The presence of water creates an environment that allows the growth of bacteria and fungi. In a water-free environment, these microorganisms cannot grow and preservative is not necessary.
  4. Choose products that are oil based, not water based. Choose products in the form of balm, butter, or oil but not lotion as it contains water. Oil based products don't need preservatives, but many use an antioxidant to stop the oils from oxidising and going rancid. It's good to keep oil based products in the fridge, as the cool temperatures will extend the life of the product. Fresk formulates cleansers, creams, serums, and lip balm without water, and therefore do not need preservatives.
  5. Limit the unnecessary consumption of antibiotics for the sake of our gut microbiome. Our gut health is important and is worth protecting for the better health and resilience of our skin.
  6. Make your own skincare in small batches. It might cost more initially to buy the equipment and ingredients but overall you will know what's in it and is much more cost effective in the long run. It's can also be freshly made and tailored to your specific skin which is so good for your skin.

Fresk Skincare Commitment to You

Preservatives and artificial fragrances are the most likely to cause irritation. Natural ingredients can also irritate if allergic. Fresk is gentle on your skin because:

  1. We only add quality ingredients that are truly good for you and your skin. We formulate products for you that we also use on ourselves and our loved ones.
  2. There are NO toxic or harmful chemicals in our products.
  3. We make products that are safe and good for you by having a clean and sterilised work area, good packaging and full transparency of all ingredients on the label.

For example, look at the ingredients we use in our Serum (eg organic argan oil which hydrates skin, reduces appearance of swelling, helps elasticity and soothes dry skin).
